Play Review on West Side Story essays

Play Review on West Side Story essays Drama Play Review on The musical Play that I did my review on was West Side Story by Jerome Robbins. I saw this play at the Woodland High School with my family. We went to see it because my older brother, Nick was in it. Thinking about the overall production, I liked that it was about two gangs fighting over their turf as they called it. It was cool because it showed me what simple lives they had but ending up in a tragic ending. I also liked how they seemed to have an accurate perception of what each of the gangs whore and what they acted like. The setting of the background stood for all the scenes and purposes of they play and it was like a real place in a city. I thought that was pretty cool. Thinking about the overall production, I disliked how they had so many singing scenes and that sort of got boring so I wouldnt come back and see it again. I also thought that some of they parts should have been played by the other characters (not naming any names). If I were to do things differently as the director I would have watched the movie and made a better selection who could fit the character better and who would better as a different part in the play. Overall it turned out to be really good but those would have been the changes that I would have made. A character that I did not like was Maria. She did well as the character but she didnt really fit the part. I dont want to be mean but that is just my opinion. Another person that I didnt like was Riff. He seemed to over act a little too much but he still did a good job (better than I could have done) playing the part. A person that I did like was Action. He played a good part because he acted wild and gave me the feeling that he was really that sort of person. He would always go wild when something came up and never calm down except when Tony or Riff order ...

The Courteous Conjunction That

The Courteous Conjunction That The Courteous Conjunction That The Courteous Conjunction That By Mark Nichol That is an innocuous little word, but it is often a linchpin of comprehension, making the difference between understanding and confusion. Take, for instance, its insertion or omission as a conjunction following verbs such as believe, ensure, and indicate. In the sentence â€Å"The seizure of the port will ensure command of the sea and free lines of communication,† a conjunction after ensure would make no sense; the sentence clearly states that an action will guarantee two results. However, a rewriting of the sentence changes the game. Here, it is correct to insert that: â€Å"The seizure of the port will ensure that we maintain command of the sea and free lines of communication.† (It’s not required, but it is recommended for a more smoothly flowing sentence.) Sometimes, though, the omission of the optional that is not so optional; withholding it can hinder comprehension. For example, in the sentence â€Å"I hope to ensure that his arrival does not affect our plans,† withholding that after ensure might deceive the reader into thinking that the sentence consists of the simple statement â€Å"I hope to ensure his arrival,† but he or she must then must shift gears to absorb an extended phrase that expresses a purpose. In this case, it’s almost an obligation to the writer to insert that after ensure: The reader’s train of thought is interrupted when he or she continues past the putative predicate. Insertion of that after ensure will guarantee that the reader is not derailed. Likewise, while reading the sentence â€Å"She glared at him, unable to believe what she had heard was coming from a friend she had trusted,† the reader might believe that the sentence consists only of the statement â€Å"She glared at him, unable to believe what she had heard.† To clarify that additional information is coming, it’s best to include that after believe: â€Å"She glared at him, unable to believe that what she had heard was coming from a friend she had trusted.† This assistance isn’t always essential; the sentence â€Å"I believe intervention is the wiser course† would not be initially misinterpreted as a sentence that might end at intervention. However, as a courtesy to your readers, consider always including the optional conjunction. What if you started to read a sentence beginning with â€Å"He pointed his chin to indicate the chair to his left†? You might expect that clause to be self-contained. But if the statement continues â€Å"had been left vacant for her,† you’d probably wish that indicate had been followed by that to signal that more is to come. Personnel Economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Personnel Economics - Essay Example One of the key concerns in this context is related with selecting and subsequently, assigning appropriate individual staff members with responsibilities to deliver better education to the students. The other concern in this regard has been the stimulation of adequate mechanisms in order to develop the ultimate potentials in students (Neal, 2011). Emphasising the present performance of the personnel economics framework as applied in the modern educational institutions, the discussion hereunder intends to briefly highlight the impact of teacher quality on educational outcomes. Moreover, the discussion focused on addressing the impacts of teachers’ compensation contracts on their performances or educational outcomes. Background of the Problem Arguments in various studies have signified that the professional qualities of a teacher are of paramount importance to ensure the success of a student (Hasnain & et. al., 2012; Leigh, 2012; Neal, 2011; Lazear, 2003). However, the recently o bserved changes in the global economy can be observed to have created various problems relating to teachers’ aptitude and their capabilities. ... As from the preceding few generations, it has been viewed that the personnel policies practiced by the public school systems often create link between teachers’ retention and their respective performances inappropriately; therefore, hindering the effectiveness of the entire education system to a substantial extent. However, in various scenarios, scholars have been evidently advocated that the existing tenure decision along with retention practices often involve inefficient attributes of personnel policies, which altogether affects the educational system efficiency (Neal, 2011). Nevertheless, the organisational system that tends to measure teachers’ performances creating a linkage with retention or tenure decision is not widely followed by the modern educational institutions, which eventually generates various potential issues within the system (Neal, 2011). From the observation of various studies, weak retention and promotion processes in the educational system tend to reduce the aptitude and the capability of the teachers in delivering quality education. In relation to the present educational settings, the personnel economic policies have also been identified with significant deficiencies associated with the interrelation between the performance of the teachers and their existing salary structure. Moreover, the educational institutions have further been identified to reduce cost of their services through lower salary structure of the teaching professionals owing to easy availability of competent teachers (Leigh, 2012). Although the incentive plans designed for the teachers in the educational system often play a decisive role in improving their quality, it

Character and plot Essay Example for Free

Character and plot Essay Discuss the ways in which Arthur Miller uses the characters of Alfieri to highlight cultural differences and to develop the audiences understanding of theme, character and plot. Arthur Millers A View from The Bridge uses a character called Alfieri to introduce characters, the plot and theme of the story. Alfieri is an Italian American meaning he was born in Italy and immigrated to American to work. . He is a man of his 50s and in this story, not only does he play the role of a character, but also a narrator. He makes us aware of the cultural differences between American and Italian culture through his opinions. He works as a lawyer; from this we can immediately tell he is educated and very wise. The immigration law changed in 1921-1924. This law only allowed people from Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia to migrate to America. This resulted to illegal immigration. A view from the Bridge is about the movement of immigrants migrating from Italy to America. They moved because of the American Dreams which was people from other countries going to America to start a new life and earn a good living full of opportunities. The Italian migration happened mainly between 1820-1920. More than 4 million Italian people moved to America. Brooklyn Bridge and its surrounding areas are used as the setting of the play. The word Gullet is used by Alfieri to describe the place where they live. The word is a metaphor and it creates an atmosphere that is not very pleasant to live in. Alfieris first speech introduces the background information of Italians. Italians would hardly ask a lawyer for help because in Italian culture lawyers are not good news, they are considered to be connections to disasters. The honest and trustworthy Italians can be quite revengeful. They solve their own situations by taking matters into their own hands. Although Italians are settling into America their two cultures remain diverse. Repetition of the words Distrust, Law and Justice by Alfieri signifies them and the even suggests that the plot is based on these words. Alfieri understands both Italian and American culture and can conclude in his last speech how he feels about Eddie and what he has done. From the start Alfieri hinted that the ending of the play wasnt going to be a happy one. He says and sat there as powerless as I, and watched it run its bloody course. From that, we can sense doom and that is why this play is a Greek tragedy. Eddie, Catherine, Marco use a lot of slang type sentences where as Alfieri uses long, well punctuated and sophisticated sentences. This linguistic technique makes the audience understand what is happened if they do not follow what Catherine, Eddie, Beatrice, Marco and Rodolpho are saying. The use of short, simple sentences spoken by the other characters makes the situation more realistic, makes the audience awake because it is very fast and the characters speak more often. Arthur Miller also uses a lot of exclamation marks so that the sentences are more interesting and so that the actors know when to shout or act exaggerated, this is a very good technique. With the use of exclamation mark the sentence gets energy. There is more attention than if there were long sentences. In the play there are four main characters. Eddie (a protagonist), Catherine, Beatrice and Alfieri. Eddie, a protagonist, meaning that he commits an offence without knowing it; he then learns his fault and usually results in death or suffering. He gains Alfieris sympathy towards the end of the play. Eddie loves Catherine not only as a niece but also as a daughter and a friend and Alfieri knows this. Eddie was over protective and loved Catherine too much which proved to be fatal. Alfieri knows that Eddie does not want to any one to take her away from him, but on the other hand, she does not belong to him. He says And yet, it is better to settle for half, it must be! Marco kills Eddie in Act 2. We do not know if he intended to or if it was for self-protection but in a way, this is revenge. When he was talking to Alfieri, he says In my country he would be dead by no. He would not live this long. Alfieri understands how he feels but tells him not to kill. He is in America right now and such a deed can result to a life sentence. He says To promise not to kill is not dishonourable. Italians are not as civilised as Americans but this is one of the cultural differences between the two diverse cultures. Arthur Miller includes many stage directions leaving the director making up more of their own directions. Alfieri plays the part of a character and a narrator making him A view from the bridge because he is looking and dealing with the situation and also telling the story as if it happened yesterday, this helps him to tell the story and give opinions making the audience aware, have a better understanding of the play, the characters and the plot. The moral of this story suggested by Alfieri is we should be satisfied with half if not the whole amount.

An essay on man -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"An Essay on Man† by English poet Alexander Pope is a philosophical poem, which was published, in the 18th century during a historical period called the Enlightenment. A huge emphasis was placed on the ability to think and reason during the Enlightenment. People during this era reflected about a variety of topics. Some people concerned themselves with the issue of God, which consequently caused many to question the church. Others were concerned with the organization of the Universe, and man’s place within that Universe. Often times, a literary work can reflect the thoughts and feelings of the society during the period in which it was written. In â€Å"An Essay on Man,† Pope effectively illustrates the major concerns of the people during the Enlightenment when he addresses man’s ability o reason and think for himself, and speculates about man’s place in the world, as part of the â€Å"great chain of being.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The ability to reason was the central focus of the Enlightenment also called â€Å"The Age of Reason.† Pop begins the poem by appealing to the logic and reason of his audience. He writes, Together let us beat this ample field,/ Try to open, what the convert yield†(lines 9-10). Pope encourages his audience to use the reason they have been given to examine those things that they have been advised against. To reason against those things that have been kept hidden to them. He is trying to bring them into the 18th century, asking the...

Disadvantages of Corporations

Double Taxation Double Taxation: Depending on what special rights and restrictions are attached to the shares, and how the profits of the corporation are paid out to the shareholders, there is the possibility of double taxation: the corporation must pay taxes on its profits and the shareholder may be subject to taxation on the profits paid out. This can result in greater taxation than if a corporation was not used for the business.C corporations pay taxes on profits when corporate income is distributed to owners (shareholders) in the form of dividends. This is the first taxation. The shareholders who receive dividends must also pay taxes for this distribution on their personal returns. This is the second taxation of the same money. The corporation itself does not pay taxes twice, but just the sound of â€Å"double taxation† can make potential business owners cringe. However, there is an out. Choose the IRS’ â€Å"S Corporation† tax status to avoid double taxation .In other systems, dividends are taxed at a lower rate than other income)(for example, in the US) or shareholders are taxed directly on the corporations profits and dividends are not taxed Double taxation is levying of tax by two or more jurisdictions on the same declared income (in the case of income taxes), asset (in the case of income taxes), or financial transaction (in the case of sales taxes). This double liability is often migrated by tax treaties between countries.Example: You decide to set up a corporation and have a profit of 1,000,000 in the first year. Suppose the government taxes corporate profits at 30%, then the corporation has to pay 300,000 in taxes. It is decided that 500,000 will be distributed as dividends and the dividend tax is 10%, so you will lose a further 50,000 to the government when you file your personal taxes. This is the concept of double taxation: first the company was taxed for its profits, and later shareholders were taxed for their dividends. (http s://www. boundless. om/business/types-business-ownership/corporations/disadvantages-corporations/) In many countries, corporate profits are taxed at a corporate tax rate, and dividends paid to shareholders are taxed at a separate rate. Such a system is sometimes referred to as â€Å"double taxation†, because any profits distributed to shareholders will eventually be taxed twice. One solution to this (as in the case of Australian and UK tax systems)is for the recipient of the dividend to be entitled to a tax credit, which addresses the fact that the profits represented by the dividend have already been taxed. The company profit being passed on is therefore effectively only taxed at the rate of tax paid by the eventual recipient of the dividend. In other systems, dividends are taxed at a lower rate than other income (for example, in the US) or shareholders are taxed directly on the corporation’s profits and dividends are not taxed. For example, S corporations in the US do not pay any federal income taxes. Instead, the corporation’s income or losses are divided among and passed through to its shareholders. The shareholders must then report the income or loss on their own individual income tax returns. For C corporations, the corporation ends up paying taxes twice. First, when the C corporation turns a profit, it pays a corporate tax rate on the profit amount. The second time the C corporation pays taxes is when it pays dividends to shareholders. Many businesses that incorporate choose to incorporate as an S corporation instead in order to avoid paying taxes twice. The only difference between a C corporation and an S corporation is a tax designation filed with the IRS using Form 2553.According to the IRS, an S corporation can choose to pass the income, losses, deductions and credit for the corporation through to the shareholders of the corporation for federal tax purposes. This avoids the double taxation possibility a C corporation is subject to . Double taxation. A possibility of â€Å"double taxation may arise on the dividends it pays. The corporation is taxed on its income. Then, if the corporation distributes some of the net income to the stockholders as a dividend, the dividend will be taxed again on the stockholders’ personal income tax returns. In case of corporations there is double taxation. First of all the corporate income is taxed at a flat rate and then the dividends paid to the shareholders is taxed. It may result to double taxation. Since the corporation is already taxed on its income, distributing this income to shareholders in the form of dividends may result to double taxation. This is because the dividend income received by the shareholders (natural persons) is also taxed on their personal income tax returns. Director and shareholder liabilityDirector and Shareholder Liability: While the general rule is limited liability, there are situations where directors and even shareholders of a corporation c ould be held personally liable for certain acts or failures of the corporation. There are many statutes that created personal liability on the part of directors and even shareholders. Also, the directors or shareholders might engage in activities, or fail to take certain steps, that could create personal liability. Without proper legal advise on the activities of a corporation, the benefits of using a corporation to conduct business could be lost.Record keeping Record Keeping: A corporation will be required to keep records of its shareholders, directors and officers, any changes of the shareholders, directors and officers, as well as records of its debts. Records of various other transactions or changes in the corporation must also be kept. Some of the records are open to public inspection; for example, anyone could have access to the list of shareholders although the new Business Corporations Act does have some restrictions. Corporations need to maintain more records than other bus iness entities.Corporations must file annual reports and tax returns and maintain business bank accounts and records that are separate from personal accounts. Shareholder meeting records, board of director meeting records, licenses and other corporate records also are necessary. (http://smallbusiness. chron. com/advantages-disadvantages-corporate-form-business-4389. html) Cost of organization Cost of Organization: The cost of organization for a corporation can be greater than for a sole proprietorship or a partnership. As well, there will be legal fees involved. There are many filing fees associated with forming a corporation.Nonprofits must file even more paperwork because they must apply to the IRS for tax exemption status (minimum $750 to apply). In a few states, nonprofits may also have to file separately for state tax exemption status. Even small fees can add up if you are cash-strapped already. The fees and legal costs required to form a corporation may be substantial, especia lly if the business is just being started and the corporation is low on financial resources. * The fees and legal costs required to form a corporation may be substantial, especially if the business is just being started and the corporation is low on financial resources. The fees and legal costs required to form a corporation may be substantial, especially if the business is just being started and the corporation is low on financial resources. One of the primary disadvantages of a corporation is the costs for running a corporate form of business. It costs money to incorporate with the state where the business operates. You can choose to hire an attorney or accountant to help you complete the incorporation paperwork, but it is not a requirement. If you incorporate directly with the Secretary of State, as of 2010, the fee ranges from $99 to $150.Beyond the initial incorporation fees, the corporate form of business also has ongoing fees associated with it. An annual report fee can range up to $150 a year for each year the corporation exists after the initial incorporation filing. . Incorporation is costly. Incorporating a business needs to file with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and may involve a lot of formal and legal papers, such as by laws, articles of incorporation, affidavit and board resolutions. This is sometimes done by getting the service of a corporate attorney or firms which are specialized in incorporating a business. It may also require higher amount of initial or paid-up capital for other types of corporation like financing and lending corporations. Furthermore, the amount of subscribed capital is taxed with documentary stamp tax, which may result to additional expenses to be incurred by the incorporators. (http://businesstips. ph/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-forming-a-corporation/) Greater Regulation Greater Regulation A corporation can be subject to greater regulation that can add to the cost of doing business.Various regulations may have to be complied with, for example, to sell shares, or raise capital. (http://www. whatisacorporation. com/html/disadvantages_of_corporation. html) Complexity in organization and regulation. To incorporate a business, an application with the Securities and Exchange Commission must be filed and approved. A higher capital requirement is also sometimes required for other type of corporations. Once approved, the corporation must comply with the numbers of regulations and reportorial requirements which are specifically implemented for corporations. http://businessaccent. com/2009/02/07/what-are-the-advantages-and-disadvantages-of-forming-a-corporation/) Corporations are highly regulated. Ordinary corporations are regulated by the SEC. Special corporations may be required with secondary licenses and are further regulated by other government agencies, such as Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for financing and lending companies, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for companies op erating secondary schools and Insurance Commission (IC) for insurance companies. Moreover, corporations also need to comply with the quarterly or annual reportorial requirements with the SEC and other agencies requiring those reports for certain types of corporations. This also means that the more compliance it requires, the more paper works and cost it involves. And when there are more to comply, bigger penalties are awaiting to be paid if they are not complied. Corporations can be complicated to form Corporations must file Articles of Incorporation with the state they are incorporating in for which states charge different filing fees. They may also need to file Bylaws, which may require the help of an attorney to write. Most states also require corporations to file annual documents and/or franchise tax fees. Nonprofits typically also have to pay fees for registering their charity each year. Although many entrepreneurs do file all their own paperwork, if you are new to business you s hould at least consult with a business attorney before attempting to form a corporation on your own. (http://womeninbusiness. about. com/od/corporations/a/corp-disadvant. tm) Establishing a corporation is a complex process and requires registration with the central regulatory authority and listing on a stock exchange which required fulfillment of certain requirements related to the amount of capital, number of directors, etc. Ownership Another disadvantage of corporations is that, as Adam Smith pointed out in the Wealth of Nations, when ownership is separated from management (i. e the actual production process required to obtain the capital), the latter will inevitably begin to neglect the interests of the former, creating dysfunction within the company. Some maintain that recent events in corporate America may serve to reinforce Smith’s warnings about the dangers of legally protected, collectivist hierarchies. Centralized management. Its centralized management restricts a mor e active participation by stockholders who are not major owners in the conduct of corporate affairs. Normally the corporations have a large number of shareholders; they delegate the governance function to a body of persons called board of directors. The

Hardware used in my created system Essay

The hardware my system will use is a keyboard and mouse for input and it will use a monitor and a printer for output. The actual computer tower itself is obviously required hardware, and includes a hard drive, RAM for process storage, the CPU to run all the processes in the computer and there are other things too. The wage slip is my output product (as well as the leaflet), as it is what I want to get out of my system. The input is the data in the spreadsheet, and the spreadsheet is obviously the store of this data. The process itself is getting the input to the output, and the way we do that is by using mail merge. Mail merge automatically moves the data from where we input it into our wage slip which will be printed, which is our output. Each part of my system needs hardware. The input which is the data requires a keyboard. Storage requires a hard drive, obviously. The process requires a CPU and RAM to function and the output (wage slip) requires a printer & monitor. My system can be described as a number of subsystems. The wage slip is a system in itself, having the spreadsheet as input data and storage, the actual mail merge being the process then the wage slip being your output. But deeper down, the spreadsheet alone is a system, with data entered in as input, the cells storing the data. Then the processes are the formulas manipulating the data, finally giving us wage figures as our outputs from the spreadsheet sub-system. The problem with the hardware I am using is that with a keyboard and mouse, lots of errors can be made, even with validation rules. Someone may type a 7 in hours instead of 8 and then that employee would get underpaid. A better system would be to use a card scanner, fingerprint scanner or barcode scanner with recognition of each employee’s card/fingerprint. A person could scan in when they enter the work place and then rescan back out and then the data of how many hours they had worked could automatically enter into the spreadsheet, therefore making error almost impossible. The problem with this is that there is a larger initial cost for the technology needed over a mouse and keyboard input. There are also completely different systems like using pen and paper†¦ The upside of this is that it’s extremely cheap as no expensive hardware or software is needed. There are many downsides to this system though. First of all, it is very slow, as each wage slip must be written out individually and all calculations have to be done by hand and then written down. Furthermore, lots of errors can be made using pen and paper because the calculations aren’t as consistent as using some kind of computer. Hand writing may be misread on the calculations and then it could make catastrophic mistakes when copying out the calculation results onto the wage slip. Writing each wage slip out would take so much time that it probably wouldn’t even be feasible in this day and age. Automated wage slips overcome this problem Commercial systems are normally very accurate but they’re made for very large scale operations, and so cost a lot of money. Also, our system uses very basic hardware that any computer will have, and can be adapted to the user’s needs.

Free Essays on Love Of The Father

No parable of Jesus has been used or quoted more than that of â€Å"The Prodigal Son†. The impact and the effect that this story has had on the lives of people who have heard it are tremendous. J.E. Compton says, â€Å"the greatest of all His [Jesus’] parables.† We as human beings have always struggled with forgiveness, compassion, and acceptance from the Divine Other. Victor Hugo described God as â€Å"a divine and terrible radiance.† When you and I discuss how an infinite God can have a relationship with a finite human being there is always a sense of discomfort or of deep darkness. This is a common problem when Christians everywhere began to develop a relationship with the divine God. This parable; however, sheds a new light on the relationship between sinful man and a holy God. It gives us the idea that God is our father and we are his loved children, also that he desires a relationship with us. However, if we picture God as touchy, unapproachabl e, and easily annoyed, if we image God as haughty, indifferent, or angry, if we invest him with unlovable qualities and cringe before his glance, we will dismiss the way of trust in the gospel of grace. When you and I miss the concept of God as â€Å"Abba† then we seriously jeopardize our relationship and view of our heavenly Father. A better understanding of this passage will allow us to see how Jesus taught his disciples and the Pharisees about the love and grace of God. In this exegesis I hope to help us come to an understanding of the parable in Luke 15:11-24 and what it had to say to us today. Primarily, the general equilibrium of the model presents the connection between the agents’ behavior and policy action (25). Similarly, the comprehensive specification of the stochastic shocks contributes to the economic fluctuations that facilitate the identification of the transmission of the shocks to the economy (23). The monetary policymakers employ the dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models in conjunction with other statistical tools to determine policies quantitatively.
